Who This Pistol Is For (And Who It’s Not)

I’ve seen a lot of folks come through our shop or out on the range, and the Glock 36 tends to click with specific shooters. Think of it like picking a truck versus a sports car—they’re both great, but for different jobs.

Buy it if: You’re a concealed carrier who wants the stopping power of a .45 ACP but needs a slimmer, more comfortable profile than a double-stack like the Glock 30. You’re looking for a reliable, no-fuss defensive pistol that’s easy to maintain. You appreciate the classic Gen 3 Glock feel and controls.

Skip it if: Your primary goal is maximum magazine capacity. The single-stack design is a trade-off for slimness. You’re set on the latest Gen 5 features like an ambidextrous slide stop or a flared magwell—the G36 is a Gen 3 platform. If you want a softer-shooting .45 for extended range sessions, a heavier, full-size model might be a better fit. For those wanting more rounds, check out our handgun section for double-stack .45 options.

What Makes the Glock 36 Stand Out: Key Features

  1. Slimline .45 ACP Frame: This is the headline. The G36’s frame is significantly narrower than the Glock 30, its double-stack sibling. It feels like a different class of pistol in the hand and on the hip, making it a dream for all-day concealed carry.
  2. Proven Gen 3 Platform: It uses the classic, time-tested Gen 3 operating system. The trigger safety, firing pin safety, and drop safety are the same reliable mechanisms found in millions of Glocks worldwide. There’s a comfort in that proven track record.
  3. Six-Round Magazine Capacity: The standard magazine holds 6+1 rounds of .45 ACP. It’s a compromise for the slim design, but for many defensive scenarios, it’s a solid loadout. Aftermarket options like a Glock 36 extended magazine are available if you want a bit more grip and capacity.
  4. Durability You Can Count On: Like all Glocks, the 36 uses a Tenifer-treated steel slide married to a polymer frame. This isn’t just marketing fluff. I’ve seen these pistols run in all conditions, from dusty Texas ranges to humid coastal climates, with minimal maintenance.
  5. Simple Field Stripping: Disassembly for cleaning is the same, straightforward Glock process. Pull the trigger? No. Pull the slide back slightly, push down the two takedown tabs, and release the slide forward. It’s one of the first things I teach new shooters.

Glock 36 vs. The Competition: A Head-to-Head Look

Let’s be real—you have choices. Here’s how the G36 stacks up against two common alternatives. It’s like comparing a trusted, well-worn leather holster to a brand-new Kydex one. Both work, but they feel different.

Feature Glock 36 (Gen 3) Springfield Armory XD-S .45 (Mod.2) Taurus G3c (9mm, for price comparison)
Material & Build Glock polymer frame, Tenifer-treated steel slide Polymer frame, Melonite-treated steel slide Polymer frame, blued or stainless steel slide
Quality & Fit Consistent factory fit, legendary reliability Excellent fit and finish, grip safety feature Good value, fit can vary more than the others
Compatibility Uses proprietary G36 mags; some holster cross-compatibility with other slim Glocks Proprietary Springfield mags & holsters Wide holster compatibility, shares mags with other Taurus G series
Shipping & Availability In stock, ships same-day from Houston Varies by retailer Widely available, often drop-shipped
Lifespan & Durability Extremely high round-count potential with proper care Very durable, proven defensive pistol Good for the price, but long-term durability may not match the others
Price Point $420.00 ~$500 – $550 ~$250 – $300

The Glock 36 vs 30 debate is the most common one I get. The G30 holds 10+1 rounds but is thicker. The G36 gives up four rounds for a much slimmer, more concealable package. It’s a pure trade-off: capacity for comfort.

The Honest Pros and Cons

After handling hundreds of these, here’s my straight take.

Pros:

  • Outstanding Concealability: The 1.13″ width is the real deal. It disappears under a t-shirt.
  • .45 ACP in a Manageable Package: It delivers serious caliber performance in a gun that doesn’t feel like a brick.
  • Glock Reliability: It’s not a myth. The Gen 3 system is simple, over-built, and just works.
  • Simple Maintenance: Field stripping a Glock 36 for cleaning takes 10 seconds and no tools.
  • Aftermarket Support: From night sights to Glock 36 holster options, you can find what you need.

Cons:

  • Limited Capacity: 6+1 is the trade-off for the slim frame. If you need more rounds, look at a double-stack.
  • Snappy Recoil: It’s a light .45. Recoil is more pronounced than in a full-size steel pistol. Good technique is key.
  • Gen 3 Only: There is no Glock 36 Gen 5. If you want the latest features, this isn’t the model.

Your Glock 36 Questions, Answered

How do I disassemble a Glock 36 for cleaning?

Ensure the pistol is unloaded and the chamber is empty. Point in a safe direction. Pull the slide back about 1/8 inch. While holding it there, pull down both slide lock levers (the takedown tabs) on either side of the frame. Gently release the slide and pull the trigger to allow the slide assembly to move forward off the frame. That’s it. No trigger pulling before this process.

What’s the best way to clean a Glock 36?

After field stripping, I use a simple process: brush the barrel, wipe down the slide interior and barrel hood, clean the feed ramp, and lightly oil the slide rails, barrel hood, and connector. Avoid over-oiling. A drop goes a long way. The Glock 36 runs better slightly dry than dripping wet.

How many Glock 36 pistols were made?

Glock doesn’t release exact production numbers by model. However, the G36 was in continuous production for many years and was a popular seller, especially in the US market. It’s safe to say hundreds of thousands were produced. It was discontinued for a time but brought back due to consistent demand, which tells you something about its following.

Is the Glock 36 good for beginners?

It can be, with the right training. The .45 ACP recoil in a light pistol requires solid fundamentals. I often recommend a 9mm for brand-new shooters to master the basics first. However, for a beginner specifically set on a .45 for concealed carry who is committed to training, the G36’s simplicity and reliability are major pluses.

What holster works with the Glock 36?

You need a holster specifically molded for the Glock 36. Due to its unique slimline .45 frame, it does NOT fit holsters for the Glock 30 or other .45 Glocks. Some holsters for the single-stack 9mm/40 Glocks (like the G43) might be close, but for safety and retention, always get a dedicated Glock 36 holster.

Where can I buy a Glock 36 magazine online?
